 The Indy is a bargain - but only if you need the features. To equip a Pentium PC with CD-quality sound and ISDN would cost roughly twice as much as an Indy. For raw processing it runs neck and neck with a Pentium machine, and as a Unix server it has the proven reliability of the R4000 over the as yet unproved Pentium machines. Once you start using any of the special features, the Indy is an unbeatable platform. Its sound features, or video conferencing or graphics performance alone, put a PC in the shade.

La Indy è stata la prima workstation grafica di Silicon Graphics a basso costo, offerta a meno di 10 milioni di lire (nel 1993). Pensata sopratutto per la grafica 2D, il video editing e i servizi di rete, era piuttosto scarsa nel 3D.
Come tutte le macchine Silicon Graphics, era estremamente avanti rispetto agli standard dell'epoca, nonostante fosse proposta come soluzione Entry-level. Aveva una porta ISDN integrata, un'interfaccia di rete Ethernet a 10 Mbps  e un connettore per occhialini stereo 3D. In dotazione aveva la Indycam, una piccola webcam da posizionare sopra al monitor.
